With cosmetic dentistry you can create the best possible smile for your mouth. Your cosmetic dentist will do a wide range of aesthetic procedures from teeth whitening and shaping, to closing spaces and replacing teeth.
Common Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
Teeth whitening: Teeth can become stained or discolored over time. This can be a result of smoking, certain medications or from food or beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine. Using a chemical process, your dentist can bleach teeth either as an in-office procedure or provide you with a whitening system that you can use at home.
Dental bonding: Used to fill excess space between teeth, or to repair teeth that are decayed, chipped, broken or badly stained. Bonding can be used as an alternative to amalgam fillings. In dental bonding the surface of the tooth is roughened and then a tooth colored resin is applied and then hardened with a special light.
Veneers or Lumineers: These are ultra-thin custom shells of porcelain or resin that are bonded to the front of teeth. Veneers can be used as an alternative to crowns. They can be used to mask discolored teeth or as a repair to teeth that are chipped or worn. Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers.
Crowns which are sometimes called caps, completely cover a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength and normal function. Your cosmetic dentist can make an in-office same-day crown called a CEREC crown. CEREC uses advanced 3D imaging and CAD/CAM technology to create the crown.
Enamel Reshaping: Enamel shaping and contouring is the process of shaping natural teeth to improve their appearance. This can be used to smooth rough edges, correct uneven front teeth, correct small chips and surface flaws. The procedure is quick and painless and usually does not require anesthetic.
Dental implants: For an implant, a titanium screw is surgically placed allowed to fuse with the bone. Once in place, they allow your cosmetic dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. These are a good alternative to a bridge and a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth.
Bridges: A dental bridge is a type of crown that is used to span a gap and replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. These are sometimes called a fixed partial denture. Bridges can be made from porcelain, gold alloys or a combination.
