If you’ve ever wondered how it is that a cosmetic dentist gets you that perfect smile, you might be surprised to know that many skilled dentists use a diagnostic wax-up. With cosmetic dentistry, there’s very little room for error. This is why it’s so important that the dentist get a blueprint (in this case, a wax-up model) based off of accurate impressions.
What is a Diagnostic Wax-Up – Cosmetic Dentistry
Getting an accurate picture of the current state of a patient’s mouth and proposed treatment begins with obtaining an accurate impression of the patient’s mouth. Those impressions are then used to create a detailed treatment plan and prescription by your dentist and a skilled dental laboratory technician.
A very accurate wax model of the proposed treatment is then created based off of those initial impressions, which helps the patient understand what the treatment will do for him or her. Having a physical model of what the proposed treatment will do for a patient also allows a dentist to make any necessary changes to the treatment plan before working on the actual patient’s teeth.
When are Diagnostic Wax-Ups Used?
Diagnostic wax-ups can be used for just about any cosmetic dentistry treatment, including crowns, dental implants, porcelain veneers, or entire smile makeovers. The wax models also allow the dentist to create better temporaries when necessary.
