Morning breath isn’t exactly the most romantic thing to wake up to each morning, but according to an article from Mayo Clinic, using a tongue scraper regularly may be part of the answer for someone who can’t seem to get rid of bad breath.
What is a Tongue Scraper?
A tongue scraper is just what it sounds like; a simple tool used to scrape built up bacterial film off of your tongue. Film can be caused by things like poor hygiene, yeast infection, health conditions, medication and smoking.
How Do You Use One?
Starting at the back of the tongue, a tongue scraper is pulled across the tongue to the tip several times until the tongue feels clean, usually 5-10 rounds depending on the cause and build-up. Follow this up with an oral rinse.
Where Do I Buy a Tongue Scraper?
There are many styles of tongue scrapers on the market, but the best style to purchase is a stainless steel tongue scraper. Stainless steel is strong, durable and easier to clean than plastic. You can usually find a variety of tongue scrapers at local drugstores or online.
A Note on Oral Hygiene
Using a tongue scraper alone will not combat halitosis (the clinical term for bad breath.) Good oral hygiene is essential for complete oral health, including brushing twice a day, flossing, and regular cleanings. Severe halitosis may have an underlying cause that needs to be addressed to resolve problems with chronic bad breath. Your dentist can help you identify the root cause behind halitosis.
