It affects many people at some point in their life, but what causes tooth sensitivity? There are several reasons why someone may experience tooth sensitivity.
Dental Hygiene Habits/Products
Brushing your teeth too hard can brush away protective layers that protect the nerves in your teeth. Using whitening toothpaste or excessive mouthwash use can also make teeth more sensitive. Choose a softer toothbrush and switch to a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth.
Trauma to the Tooth
Eating acidic foods, grinding your teeth, cavities, or cracking your tooth can cause tooth sensitivity by exposing the nerves in your teeth. Avoiding certain foods, improving dental hygiene, and protecting your teeth can help prevent sensitivity caused by these things. Post-dental procedures can also cause tooth sensitivity, however, if the sensitivity doesn’t subside within a few days, you’ll want to follow up with your dentist as there may be an infection.
Old Leaky Fillings
As fillings get older, they can weaken and separate from the tooth enamel, allowing bacteria to build up. Fillings can usually be replaced quite easily.
Gingivitis and receding gums are common problems which can cause tooth sensitivity, especially as you age. There are some treatment options available for both gum disease and receding gums.
Allowing that layer of fuzz to develop isn’t doing you any favors. Plaque build-up can render your teeth sensitive. Prevent sensitivity from plaque build-up by brushing twice daily and flossing.
