Are you anxious about your dental treatment? Sedation dentistry provides a safe and comfortable alternative. Oral sedation is easy to administer. You only have take a prescribed pill prior to your appointment.
People may fear the dentist for many reasons. Perhaps they had a bad experience when they were young. Some people hate needles or have a problem getting numb. Some get anxious from the dentist office noises, smells and tastes. Some have a bad gag reflex. Oral sedation dentistry offers a calming alternative for these people.
The medication will start taking effect before you arrive, will relax you and keep you conscious throughout your dental appointment. Because of the amnesiac properties of the medication, you will have little or no memory of the visit. Oral sedation can be combined with inhalation sedation and/or IV sedation.
Sedation dentistry is very different than general anesthesia where a patient is completely asleep. Oral sedation is a form of conscious sedation where you are very relaxed. Conscious sedation allows you to enter a state of relaxation while staying awake during the procedure. You will be much less likely to experience anxiety from it.
Advantages of Oral Sedation
- Easy to administer.
- Anxiety is alleviated.
- Safe and easy to monitor.
- Works well for most people (children and adults).
- No needles.
Disadvantages of Oral Sedation
- Level of sedation is not easily adjusted.
- You must have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
- A separate medication must be administered as an analgesic (pain relief) if required.
When you awake after your treatment, you will feel comfortable, relaxed and stress free. Oral sedation may make you drowsy, so it is unsafe to drive yourself. You will need to have a friend or relative drive you home.
